Capturing Colour
Vivid colour is one of the great delights of working with glass though there are also many techniques to form exciting subtle colour combinations. The class will explore a range of ways to control colour and pattern with both compatible glass and applied enamels on float glass.
Gerry King will bring to this course the experience of almost 40 years of working in contemporary glass. He has developed a variety of techniques for manipulating the position of colours in kiln formed and cast glass. The knowledge you will gain can be applied to craft, art and design works. Whether you make small plates or major sculptures, or anything in-between, there will be a wealth of learning opportunity. We will engage in individual and group projects, some directed and others to your own design.
You will experience numerous techniques in kiln working, firing and presentation techniques of finished works. In the evenings there will be illustrated lectures on international contemporary glass. While the class will be mainly engaged in kiln working there is opportunity to experience flame working and glass blowing techniques. Works from the kiln will be finished with coldworking using various equipment and methods.
Gerry will be assisted by Andreas Doeringer, a master glass worker and exhibiting glass artist from Austria and Sheena Larsen, who has an Australian Master’s degree in glass with specialization in casting.
The class is suited to all levels of experience including absolute beginners. Each participant’s individual level of experience will be used as the starting point of the projects addressed. There is grand scope for the experienced glass artist in this class. We can also cater to artists from other media who wish to experience glass.
